CELL DIVISION AND REPRODUCTION

Lesson 1- Introduction

Whiteboard brainstorm session to establish any prior learning students may have.

Once the white board activity is complete introduce students to the life cycle of cell and the need for cell divison and reproduction in the continuity of life, through a class discussion.

Lesson 2 - Mitosis

Explain chromosomes and reiterate the differences between sex cells and autosomal body cells.

Using diagrams from a powerpoint explain to students the process of mitosis including the end results in terms of number of daughter cells and chromosomes in each cell.

Get students to explore the different stages of mitosis by creating a role play in small groups of 3-4, which they will present back to the class.

Lesson 3 - Mitosis Prac

Show students a video clip from the movie Twilight where Edward and Bella are in Science looking into a microscope at slides of Mitosis.

Explain to students the prac procedure and that their task is to, like Bella and Edward find the different stages of Mitosis and draw them onto a poster, they must ensure include as muc detail as possible.

To wrap up the class have a challenge where the Twilight clip is repeated and students must explain by drawing on the whiteboard what Edward and Bella would be seeing under the microscope.

Lesson 4- Meiosis

Show the meiosis line dance video and use it to explain meiosis alongside the text book.

Get the students to answer questions about meiosis and the benefits of this process in sex cells.

In their chosen format get students to complete an activity where they identify the similarities and differences between meiosis and mitosis.

Lesson 5 -
Stem Cells and Programmed Cell Death

Get students in groups to create a cell, they must consider all aspects of the cell where it comes from, what is its function, how does it divide, what happens if it gets ruined, what happens if it starts to adversly affect other surrounding cells and does it ever die?

Once the students have explained their ideas to the class, use it to lead into a discussion about stem cells and programmed cell death and their function.

Lesson 6 - Jeopardy Revision

Using Jeopardy as a revision game, revise with students the concepts covered in Cell Division and Reprodction, additionally include questions that test prior knowledge that is vital for the Genetics topic.
